Chess

Chess is the world's favourite strategy game, and here you can play it in seconds. Send a friend a room code and play on your own phones, jump into a quick match, or practise against the computer.

Every rule is in: castling, en passant, pawn promotion, check, checkmate and stalemate, plus draws by repetition, the 50-move rule and too few pieces to mate.

Features

• Play a friend online in a private room, or Quick match with anyone
• Play vs the computer on Easy, Normal or Hard. The hard engine looks several moves ahead
• Every legal move is shown when you tap a piece, so it's great for learning
• Hand-drawn pieces, smooth sliding moves, check alerts, captured pieces and material count
• Time per move of 15, 30 or 60 seconds, or no limit. Matches of 1, 3 or 5 games
• Resign button, chat and emoji reactions. Free on phone, tablet and computer

1. Start a game: create a room and invite a friend, tap Quick match, or play vs the computer.
2. Move: tap one of your pieces to see where it can go, then tap a highlighted square. White moves first; players swap colours each game.
3. Capture by moving onto an enemy piece.
4. Special moves: castling (move the king two squares towards a rook), en passant, and promotion (a pawn reaching the far side becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight).
5. Win by checkmate: the enemy king is attacked and can't escape.
6. Draws: stalemate, the same position three times, 50 moves with no capture or pawn move, or not enough pieces left to mate.
